Officers reported they were notified by a resident who discovered a car in Hanau covered with red-colored fluid

Around fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they stated.

Officers then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.

City officials said they were working "to solve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.

A senior political figure said the incident made him without words and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
